Novell by Shin Dong-Hyuk
A Novell about Shin Dong-Hyuk from North Korea, who has escaped a prison camp, Camp 14....
Shin Dong-hyuk - Camp 14
"Name?" "Shin Dong-hyuk" "Age?" "47 years old" "Crime?" I hold a pause. My crime is being a freeman, with my own thoughts and dreams. My crime is, I fight for those, who cannot fight for themselves. That's what I should have said, but the only words that comes out my mouth is; "Being an enemy to the country". The man behind the glass nicks to the two guards holding me, and they drag me down the dark hallway.
Before all this I lived peacefully with a wife and two children. I was a democrat who worked in the government. I had everything that I wanted. High status, money, a good job, everything. But I also have fought for my status. I came from a farm in the struggling part of North Korea. So in my freetime I worked for the organization "East". And my freetime job eventually took over my daily job. I started to gather people, for a democratic party. But before we could start any plan, we got stabbed in the back. The police got involved and I ended up here, in camp 14, a Korean prison camp. 10 years have passed now, and I can't take a day more.
They drag me down to the backyard, place's me in front a giant rock, and throws a shovel at me. If I don't hurry up I'd get thrown down to room 12. That means I'd be isolated in five days. No water and no food, a completely dark room, and if you decide to be stubborn, it's room 13. I get goosebumps thinking about it. I couldn't imagine that our oh so great Northern Korea, would have places like this. We have all just been eating from the presidents hand all this time. Everything makes sense, the hunger, no clean water, inequalities, poverty and on and on. We live in a horrible country, a lying country. But no one can change that, it's only the government that has the power, and they don't even see how wicked it is. I can't wait for tonight.
Time passes by and I think that I've been digging for almost 6 hours. Daily duty, community service they say. The two guards are on their way. The sun is hitting me, my whole face is sunburned, and it stings. My arms are as heavy as four watermelons and I'm standing on two small carrots. The guards is here. I get eye contact with another prisoner. It's time, to nights, it's everything or nothing. I'm back in my sell, it's just as dusty and disgusting as always. A small window allows the last sun rays to hit the wall. I sit still until the sound of the heavy door closes and the lock clicks. I find the papers, and a nail file. I knock with my almost skinless knuckles on the wall.
Knock...knock...knock...
Three knocks comes back. We are ready. I rush to the window, and starts to fill on the bars. There comes a ring when the metal hits the floor. A rush went thru me, as one thought came across my mind. "You are going to die in here". But nobody came. I got the two last bars out, and checked to my friend - Do Bong Sung . We have been planning this for three years now. We can't wait to get out, but we must behave cause, one mistake could lead to death. I crawl out of the window. At first I properly couldn't fit thru it, but after 10 years in here, you can easily fit thru anything. I land in a container with coal. I see Do Bong Sung smash down in the coal, it must be at least five meters we have fallen. We cover our self In the coal, as an camouflage. The sun has gone down, and it's almost as dark as the coal. "Get down" Do Bong Sung tears me down. A light appears over us on the wall. And we can hear walkie's. The light disappeared along with the sound. I think that we have been laying here for 20 minutes now, but none of us dared to move. But it's now or never. I look up, I whispers to Do Bong Sung that its clear. We climb down and run into a ruin of an building. It's already hard to run, I can only just get my feet over the ground. I find the papers, there's a map over the whole camp including the tunnel system. I look Do Bong Sung in the eyes and says that it's time to go under the ground. I could only see his sparkling eyes, no fear to be found. And a set of white teeth appears, he takes my hand. There's a big hole in the floor, we climbed down. It literally smells like someone was murdered down here, or maybe even a massacre happened down here. We turn left, right, left and left. We just needed to get forward. One hour, two Hours, three Hours, times just passed by, and I can feel that I'm becoming weaker and weaker. I close my eyes for a minute. Shin! Shin! Someone is shaking me, it's Do Bong Sung. Shin you have too wake up we are almost there. He looks nervous. I try to stand up, but an excruciating pain hits me. Is this the feeling of dying? All my limbs closes down and I am at the edge of collapsing. Do Bong Sung quickly comes and supports me. We can see the moonlight. The smell of the air is totally different. I already feel like a free man. We start walking, we are heading to a train, three kilometers from here. Oure walk speeds up we are almost running. After barely a kilometer we hear the sirens screaming our names. Now we are running. The pain is loathsome, but I have to run or else it's over. We hear dogs in the back ground. "How long can it take?" For Do Bong Sung spits out, "Not long my friend, see!" There is two red flashing lights 200 meters ahead of us. "I see it" screams Do Bong "The train, it's here!". We stops at the train rails. We hear gun shots. But we don't look back for we need to time our jump. Three, two, one Jump! I got on, but I cant see Do Bong. Until a scream gets my attention, he is holding on the side of the train. He got shot. I rush over to him and tries to pull him in, but I'm so exhausted. It feels like a thousand needles coastally sticking me. " Its okay Shin, just let me go now" I look at him, he can be serious say that. "Let go Shin" I cant let go of him, not after all this. In the glance of the moment he gets out of my grab. The last thing I see is him smiling and says "Live"
Two years have passed now. I live in Denmark, with my family. I work for an organization, who helps struggling people in North Korea. I still have nightmares from the camp, and sometimes it's so hard that I can't even go out for a whole day. But I keep on fighting, not just for my sake, but for Do Bong Sung's and all the mistreated people in North Korea.
